First Time Out raising awareness/Sensibilisation hors de Koudougou

ASK C5 at Nandiala / l'Equipe ASK C5
On Friday 16th February 2018, ASK cohort 5 did their first trip out of Koudougou to raise awareness on disability rights. It was early in the morning, and excited to get out of community, we left. We were also joined by the handibasket club and the theatre troop, as their activities would be the main way of raising awareness. After a very bumpy journey we arrived in Nandiala, the community wondered why we were there.

Setting up of / premières phases de la Rampe
Before the awareness raising could begin we had to go and meet the mayor and the Prefet. We then went to visit a ramp that we had invested in. The ramp is situated at the entrance to the hospital, allowing disabled people to easily access the building. The ramp was coming along very well however, we couldn’t just leave without helping out.
Words from the head of ASK/ Les mots du representant ASK

Later on we rejoined the group where the crowds were looking very thin. It was expected for not many people to be there however after some microphone magic a few members of the team were able to start pulling in people to watch. As the performance started more and more people began to join the audience and watch the performances. By the end of the performance we had around 350 people. Firstly we had blind people singing, playing instruments and slamming. We then had the handibasket team doing a demonstration that allowed for great audience reaction like it was a live sport match and finally the theatre troop performed their piece on disability rights.

All of the performances were successful and we even had one of our own, Sam, perform in the theatre troop. The audience really enjoyed the performances and the atmosphere was very enthusiastic about the topic. This is a different way of awareness raising because instead of speech we are showing what people living with disabilities are capable of.

We shared a meal with the heads of the associations and later on we then spent time helping to finish off the ramp.

The overall message that we represented was that PWD have the same rights as everyone else and should be treated equally. The audience understood this message and said they are keen to make change in their community.
