1 in 10 people in Burkina Faso are
disabled. This is a startling statistic that shows why our ASK cohort need to
lay emphasis on the rights of disabled people on all their aspects.

On the 6th and 7th
of February our team set about campaigning for the rights of disabled people by
challenging mindsets. We did this by running three awareness raising sessions
at a secondary school with a variety of ages. We ran our sessions by making
them as interactive as possible to engage with the pupils, and to gain feedback
from them and to create a discussion. Our first awareness session was led by
Armel, Sam and Vincent whilst the rest of the team took photos and engaged with
pupils individually creating a vibrant atmosphere whereby the students felt
free to express their ideas in front of their peers. In this class there were
53 pupils all with different ideas of what being disabled meant. We soon
realised they knew physical disability but mental and intellectual disabilities
were less talked about.
We discussed how each of them could help promote the rights of PWD (e.g. helping the disabled when possible, treat the disabled as equals) but also in a much more wider sense in terms of how they could promote PWD’s rights in their community by leading PWs to inclusive sports and by trying to influence other people’s mindset.

Our
second and third awareness raising sessions were ran on the 7th February lead
by Alioune, Emmanuel, Sam and Vincent. They were very similar and successful
much like the first. The third session was with pupils who were older than the
previous two and so we enjoyed exchanging stories about living with and the everyday
challenges PWD face. We also gained satisfaction in the fact that pupils spoke
some English so it meant UK volunteers could address a wider range of the class
and express their opinions and views on the matter thereby offering different
perspectives.

In total during the week we presented
in front of 395 pupils raising awareness on
disabled rights.
We also started attending the
handibasket training where we support the handibasket team during the trainings, this raises
awareness because it promotes inclusive supports. We also got the opportunity
to play alongside the handibasket team, it shows we can all be equal and play
together. Inclusive sport allows people
with disability to be more included in society. The handibasket team train from
8am-10am on Thursday mornings and 4pm-6pm on Sundays. Anyone can go and
support the handibasket team because the experience changes your mentality to
see how talented these people are.
