Lending a helping hand: the beginning

Hello and welcome to the first blog from ASK cohort 24! We’ve completed our second week here in Koudougou and have officially started putting our plans into action. After last week's meeting with the ASK partners, we put together our team plan to set out what we hope to achieve during our placement. With lots of exciting ideas, we’re focusing upon sustainable action with English and French lessons, awareness raising sessions, IT training and work with the handibasket and theatre groups. Before delivering the sessions we were assigned our roles within the team, each with different responsibilities to fulfil the objectives of the action plan.

Welcome to the new team ASK!!
Meet the latest cohort: Cheick, Jennifer, Drissa, Georgia, Darius, Tristan, Viviane, Macaire, Djeneba and Leanne.

Our 1st handibasket training / notre 1ere session de Handibasket
The team has been very excited to get started and on Wednesday the first French lesson was delivered at the ASK office. The lesson involved introducing attendees to the French alphabet and greetings - we also managed to teach some greetings in English! The class was a positive start to activities and the team are looking forward to continuing to deliver these sessions over the coming weeks.  On Thursday morning, the team visited the handibasket club to watch the players in action and introduce ourselves to the people we’ll be working alongside over the coming weeks.

Teaching French our very own way / Cours de Français à la manière ASK
On Friday, the team started with a mathematics lesson and introduced the attendants to addition and subtraction. In the afternoon, the team delivered their first awareness raising session at a primary school with 600 participants! We demonstrated inclusive games such as blind running and three-legged racing, with the children trying the games themselves to get a sense of what it’s like to live with a disability. Afterwards, the team delivered speeches about different disabilities and how to be conscious of being inclusive and aware of the different disabilities people live with. The team did great and the session was a success! We also handed out booklets with information on how to remain inclusive and aware of disabilities.  With one of the primary focuses of our work being sustainability, we hope that these booklets allow the children to remain aware of the information we passed on and to spread awareness to those around them. Saturday morning saw more lessons being delivered, with university students talking with the team to tell us what they hope to achieve through the English and IT courses. We began with processing word documents and using different tools to format documents.

Raising awareness on the rights of PWDs at Wend Panga primary school / Sensibilisation à l'école primaire Wend Panga

After these weeks activities, the team took some time to reflect on the sessions delivered and spoke about future plans and how best to give the participants sustainable and informative resources. This week is just the beginning of the exciting plans the team has and everyone is eager to continue the hard work! We look forward to sharing our work with you and can’t wait to show you what we’re doing next!
