THE BIG DAY! ASK vs. HSB!

The day began with a very, very early start, 6am at the office for our two and a half hour drive to Pabre. After picking up the handibasket  team and their wheelchairs; and  some identity cards that were left at home, we got on the road. The journey was a little cramped but the music and snacks made the journey a little more comfy. Thankfully we had no bus troubles on the way only a small issue with some identity papers at one check-point due to it being ripped but this was cleared up no trouble.

We arrived in Pabre, although slightly late, to a warm welcome of music blaring and a large crowd gathered for the event to come. After assembling the wheelchairs and having the chance to catch up with the volunteers of HSB we got down to business and started our inclusive sports, the games on display were Torball, Injured Solider and Blind Running all of which emphasize the difficulty of doing an activity with a disability. We had plenty of children taking part with large crowds watching the games when they could not take part themselves.

Following the inclusive sports, there was the big match of the day: ASK vs. HSB at handibasket on the pitch built by the current HSB cohort with the aim of promoting disability sports. Although the pitch was still a work in progress, the players got down to it and made the best of what they had, playing a full and competitive game with a big audience of cheers and claps for every point scored through the rustic handmade basketball hoops. In the end HSB came out on top but everyone played their best and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. To follow the dramatic athletic display was a somewhat slower paced game involving the volunteers of ASK and HSB as a form of awareness raising. This provided a good laugh to the audience and basketball teams as volunteers on more than one occasion fell backwards out of the chairs trying to play whilst others were left stuck not really knowing how to manoeuvre their chairs around. The volunteers of ASK came out as the clear winners, (nothing to do with our weekly practice at all!).

After a quick lunch of fried rice and fish, the ASK volunteers filled a class room and began their cinema projection; a film was played with the aim of educating the audience about people living with a disability (PWD). The film detailed personal accounts of PWD's in Eastern Burkina Faso focusing on education, family support and personal commitment. The film was accompanied by an interactive discussion to reflect on what had been said and to reinforce its message.

Sadly by the end of the cinema projection that was our time up for the trip, our goodbyes were said and we had a chill out on the ride back with a few of us getting in the extra hours sleep missed that morning.

 Les jouers de handibasket de ASK et HSB prêts à jouer

La journée commença très tôt, à 6h00 nous nous sommes rencontrés au bureau pour 2h30mn de trajet pour Pabré après avoir transporter l’équipe de handibasket et leurs chaises roulantes ;et prendre quelques pièces d’identités que certains avaient oubliès á la maison, nous avons démarées. La journée fut coinçée, mais la music et les casse-croute a un peu plus intéréssante. Heureuseument, nous n’avons pas eu de problèmes sur la voie à part certains qui avaient leurs papiers d’identités froissés  au niveau des postes de controles.

Nous sommes arrivées légèrement en retard à Pabré, acceuillis chaleureuseument par la music et le public cible. Après avoir rassemblées les chaises roulantes, on a eu le temps de causé un peu avec les volontaires de HSB sur comment commençer notre sport inclusive. Les différentes jeux étaient le Torball, l’Injured Soldier et le Blind Running; ces trois jeux montraient la difficulté de faire des activités avec un handicap. Beaucoup d’enfants ont pris part à ces jeux sous les regards de ce large public ne pouvant pas tous participer.

Après les sports inclusives, il y’ avait le grand match du jour:ASK contre HSB sur le plateau de basket construis à moitié par l’actuel cohort de HSB. Les jouers ont donnés les meilleures d’eux-mêmes meme s’il y’en avait à faire sur le plateau sous les applaudissement de tous et de l’animation chaleureuse. Le jeu s’est terminé par la victoire de HSB bien  que chaque équipe aie donné le meilleur. A la fin du match c’était le tour aux volontaires HSB vs ASK, ce match fut un plaisir pour tous qui avaient le sourire au lèvre; mais pour les cela était plus qu’une occasion pour nous d’éssayer de jouer sur les chaises roulantes pour ceux qui le faisaient pour leurs premières fois ils ne savaient pas rouler vite sur leurs chaises. Les volontaires ASK ont clairement gagné le match (ils n’en pouvaient rien contre nous).

Après le déjeuné, du riz gras avec du poisson, les volontaires de ASK ont commencé le cinema projection dans une classe; le but de la projection c’est d’éduquer à vivre avec un handicap. Le film parle d’un bon nombre de personnes vivant avec un handicap au l'est de Burkina Faso en se basant sur leurs education, le soutien familial et l’engagement personnel. Le film fut accompagné par une discussion qui reflète sur ce qui a été et pour renforcer le message.

A la fin de la projection il etait l’heure de retour  pour nous, nos salutations furent et nous avons pris la voie pour koudougou, certains rattrapaient le sommeil perdu.
