Les amazones / the Amazons

Les Pagnes du  08 MARS au /Patterns of InternationalWomen's Day- in Burkina

Each year, the international Women’s Day is celebrated on 8th March. Women! But let’s deal with those with disabilities.

There are more than 16,8000 people with disabilities in Burkina out of which only 12.7% are educated. 8.5 % women versus 16.1% men. Illiteracy and daily challenges did not prevent the amazons from showing their entrepreneurial spirit, dynamism and competitive profile.

For them “a hand gone is a strength found” to that they add this quote “I have a disability, but I’m not a disability” These women are doing things like: entrepreneurship, sport, projects, education…proving their disability is not holding them back.
Our lady  / notre ESTHER

Esther is a licensed hairdresser who does not see her disability like a problem. She found autonomy through work. She also plays handy-basket and got two medals at wheelchair racing (2016-2017)

She wants everyone to understand their lives including the challenges they face and to that she wish all people with disabilities all around the world to try to be independent and find themselves homier.  Do not look down on yourself and no one will disrespect you.

Cécile

Notre seconde « LADY » se nomme Cécile. Mère, elle est handicapée moteur. C’est une tisseuse de pagne traditionnel.

Here is our second woman, she is Cécile, a mother, and she has a disability and moves with a wheelchair. She is  a weaver of  material.

She contributes to the development of her community by working. The 08th of March for her, is an occasion for women to meet and share their experiences to work for a better future as well as to enjoy the day.

It took Cécile a time to overcome her disability. She is now autonomous, is respected and her handicap is no more a “stop” to life “I understand, I interact with others and we have associations to help each other, it helps me a lot not to see my disability as an obstacle, and I am proud of myself”

Self-sufficiency is one of the qualities of Cécile: “I’m Mother of three children. I work every day to take care of myself… I give money to my children every morning for school”.
Cécile has this for all the women living with a disability “you have to work to be independent financially”.
