Handibasket, a sport almost identical to basketball except for the fact that it’s played in wheelchairs, has been a source of great of joy for ASK Cohort 4 over the past 7 weeks. We’ve been training with Koudougou talented Handibasket team twice per week, both helping out by retrieving the balls, and also by getting in the chairs ourselves quite often. We also teach them different techniques in order to be efficient in front of the basket, especially with regards to shooting. Another big step forward is that ASK volunteers have now also introduced the sport of handball to the team.

The team is made up of around 12-15 individuals from the disabled community of Koudougou, constituted of both men and women, and is captained by Mr Daouda Kabore. Unlike the volunteers, who are lucky to score at all despite our best efforts, the team have honed their skills down to a fine art, having recently participated in a national tournament in Ouagadougou, playing in this national tournament for the second time. During the competition this year, two members of the Handibasket club received medals. A gold medal for throwing the ball, a silver medal for the wheelchair 800 metre race and a bronze in the 100 metres, all achieved by Mrs Guissou. Esther Simpore also won a bronze medal in the 100 metre race. Zipping up and down the court, the team never hesitate to pass us the ball when we’re open and get us involved, and despite the often pitiful results (apparently, getting the ball near the hoop is a prerequisite to scoring), we always have a fantastic time with them.

As well as playing Handibasket, many of the team also attend the lessons run by ASK Cohort 4, mainly coming to learn French and ICT skills. This has allowed us to build up a connection with them, both on and off the court, which is really beneficial to all parties, especially considering that a large part of the team are also association members, who ASK work closely with.

Training sessions tend to be on Thursday mornings and Sunday afternoon so it’s a really great way to break up the routine of the week a little bit by playing wheelchair basketball for two hours every Thursday morning before grabbing a shower if necessary, and then heading into work before lunch and the afternoon lessons.

A welcome addition of Handiclub over the past few weeks has been that of Torball on the courts nearby, which is a game designed to be played by the blind. There are 3 to 4 defenders spaced equally apart across a goal-line, and these players function both as goalkeepers and as attackers. The players never leave the line, instead moving up and down the line laterally, using sound to detect the whereabouts of the ball and attempting to stop it before it crosses the goal-line. If they manage to block it, the team earn the right to attack themselves, throwing the ball as hard as possible to try and find a gap in the opposing team’s defence. The volunteers have given Torball our best shot, and do indeed continue to, despite being what I’d imagine to be quite a large irritant to the other players, since we only manage to stop goals about 1-in-10 times. Seeing the others diving across concrete floors, stopping the ball at any cost, is incredibly impressive, and we’re often left in awe of their skills and attitude.

We look forward to continuing to play with the team over the next few and final weeks, and searching out wheelchair basketball clubs once we get back to our home cities to show off our newfound talents.
